Activity Overview
Hematopoietic stem cell transplant–associated thrombotic microangiopathy (TA-TMA) affects approximately 10% to 20% of allogeneic transplant patients. TA-TMA is difficult to diagnose, as symptoms often mirror those of other thrombotic conditions, and they can lead to multiple organ failure and mortality in these patients. A better understanding of the pathogenesis of TA-TMA and earlier diagnostic strategies can lead to emerging therapies and improved patient outcomes.
This Community Practice Connection™ program provides an in-depth review of some of the key highlights from the 2022 Tandem Meetings of ASTCT & CIBMTR held in April 2022. This unique and engaging multimedia activity is ideal for the community-based clinician and focuses on the practical aspects managing patients with TA-TMA, putting recent clinical trial data into clinical context. The program is designed for those who did not attend the live meeting and to help reinforce learnings for those who did.
Target Audience
This educational program is directed toward hematologists, oncologists, blood and marrow transplant (BMT) specialists, BMT nurses, and other clinicians involved in the treatment of patients with hematologic malignancies.
Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this activity, you should be better prepared to:
- Assess current diagnostic criteria for TA-associated TMA and ways to differentiate from other stem cell transplant-associated complications
- Describe the role of dysregulated complement activation in the pathogenesis of TA-associated TMA
- Evaluate the rationale concerning the application of inhibitors of the lectin and other complement pathways, including MASP-2 inhibitors, in the treatment of TA-associated TMA
- Discuss recent clinical trial data concerning the effectiveness of current and emerging therapies in the treatment of TA-TMA
