Medical Crossfire®: Which Patients with Hematologic Malignancies are at Risk for Secondary Immunodeficiency (SID)… and How Can We Leverage Evidence to Improve Their Outcomes?

Overview:

Secondary immunodeficiency (SID) is an impairment of the immune system that is caused by derivative factors such as diseases, medications, and environmental factors. Patients with hematologic malignancies are at risk for SID due to both their underlying disease and, oftentimes, their treatment. It is essential for health care providers caring for patients at high risk for developing SID to be aware of best diagnostic and management practices for this serious immune impairment.

In this live webcast, ancillary to the 2023 EHA Annual Meeting, international experts in SID review the pathophysiology and diagnosis in patients with hematologic malignancies and review prophylactic and management strategies, including antimicrobials, vaccinations and immunoglobulin (Ig) therapy through a series of case-based discussions. The use of Ig replacement in patients receiving CAR-T therapy will also be examined.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the clinical burden associated with SID in patients with cancer, including the importance of early and accurate diagnosis and risk stratification
  • Assess pivotal clinical trial designs and data investigating current and emerging therapeutic agents, such as immunoglobulin therapy, in patients with SID
  • Evaluate the clinical impact of prophylactic and therapeutic regimens on the current treatment paradigm of SID regarding infectious disease management and control
  • Integrate innovative multidisciplinary tactics to effectively prevent, identify, and manage SID in patients with hematologic malignancies
