Activity Overview
Bipolar disorder is a complex mental illness encompassing developmental, genetic, neurobiological, and psychological factors that cause significant shifts in an individual’s mood, energy, and ability to think clearly. Recurrent episodes of manic or depressive symptoms characterize bipolar disorder. Although manic episodes distinguish bipolar disorder from other mental health illnesses, such as unipolar major depressive disorder (MDD), episodes of depression (also referred to as bipolar depression) often dominate the clinical course of bipolar disorder. Bipolar depression is often misdiagnosed as unipolar MDD in up to 40% of patients. As the predominant psychopathology, even in treated bipolar disorder, depression is associated with excess morbidity, poor quality of life, high rates of health care use, and suicidal behavior.
Medical Crossfire®, one of PER®’s signature educational formats, is a virtual program where a panel of 3 distinguished experts engage in spirited discussions on the complexities of diagnosing and treating patients with recurrent manic, hypomanic, and depressive episodes associated with bipolar disorder.
