Activity Overview
Anemia, a common complication in chronic kidney disease (CKD), is associated with a reduced quality of life, an increase in morbidity and mortality, and higher costs. Having CKD doubles the risk of anemia development. Anemia is associated with major complications for patients with CKD including impaired cognition, sleep disturbance, increased cardiac risk, lower quality of life, increased medical expense, and increased mortality. Despite guidelines, hemoglobin and iron stores are measured less frequently than recommended. Treatment recommendations include iron supplementation, erythropoietin-stimulating agents, and, in some cases, red cell transfusions. However, significant undertreatment of anemia in patients with CKD has been identified.
In this CME program, a panel of experts discusses the impact of anemia on patients with CKD as well as efficient methods to screen for this condition. These experts also review current treatments and introduce exciting new treatments that are on the horizon.
This educational activity is an archive of the live symposium held on March 8, 2024.
