Activity Overview
Anyone who cares for patients undergoing stem cell transplantation understandably fears graft-versus-host disease (GvHD). Treatment of acute or chronic GvHD has long involved protracted steroid use; further, poor responses have led to difficult conversations with patients to explain that their potentially curative transplant has led to a lifetime of worsening complications. Fortunately, recent phase 3 trials have identified more effective GvHD prophylaxis regimens, and emerging precision-engineered cell therapies have demonstrated encouraging long-term GvHD-free outcomes. Additionally, there is new hope for patients who develop GvHD as advances in understanding the pathophysiology of acute GvHD have led to biomarker-based approaches, minimization of steroid exposure, and development of novel targeted therapies. There are also multiple approved agents for steroid-refractory, chronic GvHD, and more are on the horizon.
In this educational program, renowned experts on the treatment of GvHD discuss evolving best practices for prophylaxis of the disease and management of its acute and chronic forms. Didactic presentations are coupled with challenging case discussions to provide insights into how to best integrate evolving data into real-world practice.
This CME-certified symposium is an archive of the live symposium that was held in conjunction with the 2024 Tandem Meetings in San Antonio, Texas, on February 23, 2024.
Target Audience
This educational program is directed toward hematologist-oncologists, oncologists, bone marrow transplant (BMT) specialists, BMT nurse specialists, and other health care providers involved in the management of myelofibrosis.
Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this activity, you should be better prepared to:
- Explain the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the development of therapies for the prevention and treatment of acute and chronic GvHD.
- Summarize efficacy and safety findings from trials that evaluated approaches to prevent and manage patients with GvHD.
- Revise effective strategies to facilitate the identification and management of treatment-related toxicities in GvHD prophylaxis and treatment settings.
- Place recent evidence in the context of their impact on evolving care paradigms in acute and chronic GvHD management.
