Overview:
This Expert Illustrations and Commentaries™ (EIC) symposium will feature clinical faculty discussing the etiology of hyperphosphatemia in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its management. The burden of hyperphosphatemia in CKD and the role of the paracellular pathway in phosphate absorption will be reviewed and considerations for managing patients with hyperphosphatemia will be highlighted. The faculty presentations will be enriched with use of video animations to illustrate the intestinal absorption pathways for phosphate and the mechanisms of action of current and emerging therapies for lowering phosphate. This unique format is designed to help clinicians identify and implement best practices in the management of hyperphosphatemia in CKD and to improve patient outcomes.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Summarize the disease burden associated with hyperphosphatemia in patients with CKD.
- Describe the pathophysiology of hyperphosphatemia, including the role of the paracellular pathway in phosphorus absorption.
- Evaluate recommended guidance for serum phosphorus targets in patients with CKD.
- Implement management plans for patients with hyperphosphatemia and CKD based on clinical presentation and severity.
