Overview:
Psoriasis is a chronic, systemic inflammatory disease that affects 3% of US adults and has seen increased prevalence over the past years. The disorder is often characterized by chronicity, high grade of disability, and related comorbidities. Notably, biologic agents targeting the IL-23/IL-17 axis have demonstrated improved efficacy compared with conventional therapies and include several FDA-approved agents.
The purpose of this case-based continuing education program is to increase the knowledge of clinicians on the key therapeutic targets within the IL-23/IL-17 pathway and the role of biologic agents directed against these key targets in the management of psoriasis, including in difficult-to-treat areas. The mechanisms of action, efficacy, safety, and limitations of these agents will also be discussed, as well as how to identify patients who would optimally benefit from these targeted biologic therapies.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Apply recommended eligibility criteria to determine patients appropriate for anti-IL-17 and anti-IL-23 biologic therapies based on disease severity of PsO
- Evaluate safety and efficacy data for approved anti-IL-17 and anti-IL-23 biologic agents directed against key treatment targets within the IL-23/IL-17 inflammatory pathway for managing PsO
- Develop holistic, individualized, management plans for patients with PsO that incorporate anti-IL-17 or anti-IL-23 biologic therapy based on patient-specific needs and shared goals of therapy
