Activity Overview

Transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) is a life-threatening disease that disproportionately affects older adults and people of African descent. The prevalence of ATTR-CM is reportedly lower in women than in men, but some study populations have demonstrated a higher proportion of women affected by the disease, providing theoretical support that it is underdiagnosed in this population.

It is important for health care providers to stay abreast of current knowledge regarding racial, ethnic, and gender disparities in the diagnosis and management of ATTR-CM. Furthermore, enhanced efforts are warranted to improve access to treatment among racial and ethnic minority groups. This online, on-demand program is designed to bring together faculty in a candid conversation about the pressing issues of health care inequities regarding ATTR-CM seen in practice, including effective ways to address these disparities.

Target Audience

This online educational activity is directed toward cardiologists, cardiology advanced practice providers, internal medicine specialists, primary care physicians, and nurses. Other health care providers involved in diagnosing and managing patients with transthyretin amyloidosis will also find it useful.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this activity, you should be better prepared to:

  • Summarize the pathophysiology of ATTR-CM
  • Describe the consequences of disease progression due to delayed diagnosis, misdiagnosis, and suboptimal therapy selection
  • Outline existing barriers to early diagnosis and use of disease-modifying therapies for patients with hereditary ATTR-CM based on geographic, racial-ethnic, and gender disparities
  • Develop clinical strategies to increase early identification of female patients with ATTR-CM to overcome longstanding disparities in effective disease management
