Activity Overview

Osteoporosis is directly attributed to an estimated 2 million fractures annually, incurring billions of dollars in hospitalizations and nursing home admissions costs.  During this activity, expert faculty will review appropriate use of screening recommendations and risk assessment tools. Longstanding and new osteoporosis treatments will be detailed by their mechanism of action and potential side effects.  The vital role of nurse practitioners will be exemplified with the many facets involved in patient education, targeted screening and effective treatment to improve quality of life and reduce fracture risk.

Educational Objectives

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
  • DISCUSS osteoporosis screening guidelines
  • DESCRIBE risk factors associated with developing osteoporosis
  • EXPLAIN each osteoporosis treatment including mechanism of action, adverse events, limitations, and uses
  • DESCRIBE a goal directed treatment plan following recommendations in updated guidelines for the treatment of osteoporosis
  • OUTLINE a plan for regular and relevant communication with and education of patients regarding both pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic aspects of care
