Department of Geriatric Medicine and Nursing
Hartford Hospital
Hartford, Connecticut

Activity Overview

Despite improved understanding and better treatments for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in recent years, it remains incurable and devastating for patients and their families. Early diagnosis is critical to ensure that patients can make their wishes known, and receive treatment early (which is when they are most likely to work).  During this On-Demand Webinar, expert faculty will facilitate discussion of AD with emphasis on the advanced practice registered nurse’s unique role in its management.  This activity provides brief guidance for diagnosing and treating AD; promotes collaborative care between specialists, primary care providers, patients, and caregivers; and stresses that the patient’s eventual decline necessitates flexibility and height vigilance from the healthcare team.

Educational Objectives

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
1. DESCRIBE neurodegenerative changes that are considered the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease (AD)
2. INTEGRATE screening and diagnostic tools into clinical practice for the early identification of individuals with AD
3. SELECT appropriate therapy for patients with AD to slow disease progression and improve patient and caregiver quality of life
4. INSTRUCT caregivers and patients on lifestyle modifications that can improve QoL
Targeted Audience: This educational activity is directed toward primary care and specialty nurse practitioners involved in the treatment and management of patients with Alzheimer’s.
