This activity will bring nurse practitioners up-to-date on the latest available and emerging options in basal insulin therapy, especially fixed ratio combinations. To help nurse practitioners address the unmet needs of patients in this area, expert faculty will discuss common barriers to the initiation of and adherence to insulin therapy, strategies to overcome these barriers, as well as implementing DMSE/S algorithm of care for improved patient outcomes. A concluding discussion will present evidence-based strategies for integrating the latest in insulin formulations into an overall diabetes management program designed to improve glycemic control; reduce risk of hypoglycemia; and make insulin therapy more convenient, manageable, and effective.
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:
List strategies to engage patients in discussions about basal insulin
Identify patients with T2DM who may benefit from the addition of insulin to their management strategy
Outline novel strategies to optimize insulin therapy in clinical practice to improve glucose control, reduce risk of weight gain and hypoglycemia, and increase patient acceptance and adherence
Describe an individualized treatment strategy utilizing a collaborative team-based approach to patient care that safely, appropriately and effectively transition patients to concentrated insulin.
