Activity Overview
Pharmacists and other healthcare practitioners must have a basic understanding of the wound healing process in order to help patients select appropriate wound care therapies. This activity will describe the wound healing process, analyze the current evidence-base for the use of alternative or herbal medications such as calendula officinalis, and suggest tips regarding patient counseling and education in the community setting.
Educational Objectives
At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
  • Explain details of the wound healing process and the use of natural alternative therapies
  • Identify the role of calendula in dermatologic applications and when to appropriately recommend it
  • Distinguish various topical dosage forms used for the management of wounds
  • Examine the role of the healthcare professional and opportunities for collaborative care (incorporating pharmacists and nurse practitioners) in the treatment of wounds using natural alternative treatments
