Activity Overview

PCSK9 inhibitors, a new class of drugs, have the potential to substantially change the treatment of hyperlipidemia by their dramatic effects on lowering LDL-C levels. Current PCSK9 inhibitors are biologics with a price tag that limits patient access either directly because of out-of-pocket cost or indirectly through the prior authorization process. In this activity, expert faculty will describe the clinical implications of recent clinical trial data on PCSK9 inhibitors and clarify patient populations for whom PCSK9 inhibitor therapy is indicated. Regarding issues surrounding patient access to PCSK9 inhibitors, potential solutions will be presented and a team-based approach to improve patient access and adherence to PCSK9 inhibitors will be outlined. Examples of prior authorization applications and appeals letters will also be presented. This activity will provide nurse practitioners with strategies to assist their patients in gaining access to PCSK9 inhibitors.
