Sickle Cell Disease: Improving the Quality and Continuum of Acute and Ambulatory Patient Care

Sickle Cell Disease: Improving the Quality and Continuum of Acute and Ambulatory Patient Care

December 2, 2021

7:00-8:30pm EST

Live, Interactive Webcast!

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is responsible for serious life-threatening complications of hemolytic anemia, inflammation, an impaired immunity to encapsulated organisms, and vascular occlusion. Secondary complications include stroke, acute and chronic organ damage, and a shortened life span. In the United States, there are more than 230,000 hospital admissions related to SCD annually. Despite the prevalence of SCD in patients and experience treating them in the United States, there are still significant gaps and dissatisfaction with care.
The management of pain in individuals with SCD remains a significant clinical challenge, in part due to its complex and poorly understood pathophysiology. Pain associated with SCD can manifest as intermittent acute pain, daily chronic pain, and acute-on-chronic pain. There are features unique to SCD that create diagnostic challenges for providers in the ED and/or mask serious complications in patients, such as acute chest syndrome. This CME activity will feature a panel of SCD experts who will address the diagnosis and treatment of patients with SCD from both a medical and a psychosocial perspective.
