Precision Medicine in Oncology: Current Role and Future Potential of In-House NGS Technologies

Precision Medicine in Oncology: Current Role and Future Potential of In-House NGS Technologies

Wednesday, November 20th, 2019

Scientific Session: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Dinner & Registration: 6:30 PM - 7:00 PM

Morton's The Steakhouse
735 S. Figueroa Street
Los Angeles, CA 90017

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) is a widely-used instrument in the field of adult hematology/oncology. However, key differences between pediatric and adult cancers at the genetic level limit the utility of the most well-established NGS panels for pediatric cancer testing. With the emergence of pediatric-tumor-specific testing assays, it is important that you are up-to-date on the latest technologies to ensure your patients with childhood cancers receive the best possible care. Through a mixed format of didactic lectures and case-based discussion, Precision Medicine in Oncology: Current Role and Future Potential of In-House NGS Technologies will improve your knowledge of NGS applications for pediatric solid and liquid tumors. This dinner meeting will provide you with an overview of the history of NGS in cancer care and its developing role in pediatric hematology/oncology. You will learn the rationales for each of the most relevant testing platforms, along with their utility, strengths, and limitations. During the program, the faculty will critically evaluate data supporting clinical application of established biomarkers in a variety of pediatric cancers and share their perspectives on use of molecular markers to personalize treatment planning and to identify patients for clinical trial enrollment. The program will conclude with an interactive panel discussion of practical considerations and challenges around the use of tumor testing technologies you may face in the pediatric/young adult oncology clinics.

Target Audience

This educational activity is directed toward medical oncologists and fellows who treat patients with cancer. Surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, nurse practitioners, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, researchers, and other healthcare professionals interested in the treatment of cancer will be invited to participate.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Outline the clinical implications of NGS for childhood and young adult patients with cancer
  • Develop evidence-based strategies to individualize treatment of childhood and young adult patients with cancer based on assessment of tumor profile and patient characteristics
  • Identify the role of multidisciplinary teams to facilitate, interpret, and implement novel in-house NGS technologies in clinical practice
  • Assess methods to overcome barriers to facilitate the use of NGS strategies for childhood and young adult patients in community settings
