Overview

The survival of individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) has improved dramatically over the past 60 years, to the point that adult patients now outnumber pediatric patients in some countries. The development and delivery of drugs that improve the clearance of mucus from the lungs and treat the consequent infection, in combination with correction of pancreatic insufficiency and undernutrition by multidisciplinary teams, have resulted in remarkable improvements in quality of life and clinical outcomes in patients with cystic fibrosis. For patients who are diagnosed with CF as an adult, recent evidence from registry data suggests a higher 10- and 15-year transplant-free survival rate when compared to adults with CF diagnosed in childhood; milder symptom onset and disease severity is thought to contribute to this observation.

In addition, the identification of mutations in the CFTR gene, along with the emergence of therapies to target the basic defect in CF, already have shown a clinical impact, and continuing developments promise to transform health outcomes for patients with the disease. These developments suggest that health care professionals need to have a better understanding of the needs of the older patient with CF, as well as how new treatments work to transform patient care.

Benefits of Attending

  • Understand the burden of living with CF from the adult patient’s perspective
  • Learn about the significance of CFTR mutations in patients diagnosed with CF later in life
  • Learn about the best predictors of survival for adult patients with CF
  • Understand who should be on a multidisciplinary CF care team

Target Audience

This educational activity is directed toward health care professionals who treat adult patients with CF. CF specialists, pulmonologists, gastroenterologists, nurse practitioners/physician assistants, respiratory therapists, and other health care professionals interested in the treatment of cystic fibrosis are also invited to participate.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the patient journey for the adult with CF
  • Discuss the pathophysiology of atypical CF as it relates to the adult patient
  • Identify the addressable factors that contribute to improved care for adults with CF
  • Analyze the efficacy and safety of current and emerging therapies in the management of adult patients with CF
  • Develop multidisciplinary team-based management strategies to improve quality of life in adult patients with CF
