Current and Emerging Treatment Options for Chronic Cough: The Role of Managed Care

With limited treatment response and a complicated etiology, the management of patients with chronic cough is often difficult. It is important for managed care professionals to be familiar with the pathophysiology of chronic cough, in particular refractory and unexplained cough, as definitions and classifications of the disease are still evolving. Patients seeking care generally have frequent comorbidities, numerous hospitalizations or visits to a specialty department, and have previously trialed many therapies including narcotics or antitussives including codeine, oral corticosteroids, systemic respiratory antibiotics, and others. Important guideline updates and currently available treatment options as well as emerging treatment options that are targeted for these patients, will be reviewed. With the right treatment approaches, chronic cough has the potential to be resolved or minimized, which will lessen the burden on healthcare resources, families, work and school, and improve patients' quality of life and overall health.
