“D” is for Diagnosis: Detecting and Treating Rare Disorders in Hematologic Practice
When clinicians encounter patients with suspected cytopenia, the necessary diagnostic workup is complex and multifaceted. Hematology specialists require an updated understanding of the presentation of cytopenias and the tests required to diagnose them, including diseases that they rarely encounter. During this highly interactive, game-style symposium, the audience will be encouraged to examine “mystery” cases, look for clues from the clinical history and presentation, evaluate diagnostic test results, and ultimately uncover the correct diagnosis. Expert faculty will then reveal the underlying disease and review therapeutic options.
Benefits of Attending
- Review diagnostic tests and assessments for earlier identification of patients with rare hematologic diseases
- Learn guideline-based considerations for managing rare hematologic diseases
- Recognize rare diseases that can lead to earlier therapy and better patient outcomes <
This educational activity is directed toward hematologists who treat patients with hematologic symptoms of unknown origin. Medical oncologists and other health care professionals interested in the treatment of hematologic diseases are invited to participate.
Learning ObjectivesUpon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Identify the key processes for making differential diagnoses of rare hematologic disorders.
- Differentiate the underlying pathology of multiple rare diseases with hematologic implications to improve diagnostic and treatment decision making
- Integrate current and emerging data into clinical scenarios regarding treatment strategies to care for patients with thrombocytopenia or thrombosis resulting from rare disorders
- Formulate treatment plans to proactively mitigate the impact of disease and treatment-related adverse events associated with treating rare blood disorders
