The recommendations and guidelines for pathologic assessment for patients with EGFR-mutated lung cancer continues to rapidly change. Various targeting agents have been approved for the treatment of EGFR mutation–positive disease. These approvals represent a major step toward significantly improved outcomes for patients with lung cancer via personalization of treatment regimens, particularly as data continues to uncover important mutational drivers. Personalization of EGFR-targeted treatment regimens hinges on the collaboration between pathologists and other members of the healthcare team throughout the treatment process. The accelerated pace of advancements in genetic sequencing and biopsy collection technique associated with treatment planning for lung cancer, including EGFR mutations, presents a challenge for you to remain current in knowledge and application of this knowledge to optimize safety and efficacy outcomes.

To help you meet this challenge, this symposium will feature a panel of medical oncologists and pathologists in a panel discussion about the pathologic assessment of lung cancer to guide the management of lung cancer. The latest data will be presented as case-based dialogue between multidisciplinary faculty to assess the clinical implication of histologic and EGFR mutational testing results in relation to planning first-line and later treatment regimens for each patient. During this activity, clinical scenarios will be presented that explore the nuances of treatment sequencing with pathologic initial assessment and reassessment after treatment initiation for further guidance based on results. Best practices for selection of treatment based on EGFR testing results for lung cancer cases with CNS metastasis, disease with limited progression, and relapsed/refractory disease following prior lines of therapy will be addressed, as well as case-based application of strategies to manage mechanisms of resistance.

Target Audience

This educational program is directed toward the American Society of Clinical Pathology audience. Other healthcare professionals involved in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer will be invited to participate.

Learning Objectives

  • Evaluate the utility of liquid biopsy and tumor biopsy as a pathologic approach to inform the choice of initial and later-line therapy for advanced EGFR mutation–positive non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)
  • Assess clinical data in the management of advanced NSCLC among patients with EGFR mutations
  • Relate appropriate management strategies for acquired resistance and communicate pathologic diagnostic information to the care team to optimize patient care
  • Define appropriate strategies for the management patients with advanced NSCLC and EGFR mutations in the setting of brain metastases and to proactively plan to care for treatment-related adverse reactions
