Medical Crossfire®: Asthma, COPD, and the Overlap Between the Two: Comprehensive Treatment Approaches to Improve Patient Care

Medical Crossfire®: Asthma, COPD, and the Overlap Between the Two: Comprehensive Treatment Approaches to Improve Patient Care

Monday June 29, 2020

Live Webcast: 8:00 PM – 9:30 PM ET

This event is not part of the official Internal Medicine Meeting 2020 Education Program.

Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are common airway diseases carrying substantial burden and negative impact on patients’ quality of life. These two obstructive pulmonary diseases have pathophysiological and epidemiological differences. While asthma is recognized as an allergic disease starting in childhood, COPD is typically caused by exposure to inhaled toxins. However, a subset of patients has features of both asthma and COPD, described as asthma-COPD overlap (ACO), and they suffer significantly worse respiratory symptoms, poorer quality of life, and increased risk of exacerbations and hospital admissions. Unfortunately, a lack of widely accepted classification criteria hampers the diagnosis of ACO, and these patients are excluded from clinical trials. In this Medical Crossfire®, expert faculty will share best clinical practices for diagnosis and management of ACO, as well as provide updates on current and emerging treatments for both asthma and COPD. Patient case presentations will facilitate application of discussions into practice. Throughout the program there will be a focus on the patient’s perspective to individualize treatment and education for improved outcomes and quality of life. Participants will be encouraged to interact with the panel through audience response technology.

Benefits of Attending

  • Gain expert perspectives on diagnosing and treating ACO in your patients with worsening airway symptoms
  • Hear the latest updates on clinical trials that may offer improved treatment options
  • Learn new ways to individualize patient treatment plans to improve adherence and optimize disease management
  • Network with your peers to discuss challenging cases and best practices
