5th Annual Interdisciplinary Prostate Cancer Congress® Online Case 1: Asymptomatic/Minimally Symptomatic Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer

Release Date: September 19, 2012 | Expiration Date: September 19, 2013
Media:  Internet-based

Overview

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men, affecting 1 out of every 6 men in the US. In 2012, it is estimated that there will be more than 241,000 new cases of prostate cancer with approximately 28,000 resultant deaths. While most advanced/metastatic prostate cancers are sensitive to androgen deprivation therapy, they will eventually progress to the stage of castration-resistance. Traditionally, treatment options for patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer were limited, with only one chemotherapeutic agent demonstrating a survival benefit in this setting. However, in the past several years a number of new systemic agents have been added to the therapeutic armamentarium based on demonstrated survival advantages.  It is important for clinicians to be aware of these new options, and understand how to use them most effectively, in order to select the most appropriate therapy, or sequence of therapies, for individual patients.

Target Audience

This educational activity is directed toward medical oncologists, urologists, surgical oncologists and radiation oncologists interested in the treatment of patients with prostate cancer. Fellows, nurse practitioners, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, researchers, and other health care professionals interested in the treatment of prostate cancer may also benefit from this activity.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  • Assess the efficacy and safety of novel agents for the treatment of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer
  • Integrate new treatment options in order to individualize therapy and optimize outcomes for patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer
