Activity Overview
Long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) therapies are associated with much lower failure rates and approximately 80% of patients continue therapy beyond the first year. It is important for nurse practitioners to understand the public health concern that calls for preventive and evidence-based care, specifically focusing on more effective contraceptives. As health care providers, nurse practitioners (NPs) need to be comfortable with long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) devices and insertion to have informed discussions with eligible patients.

Educational Objectives
At the completion of this activity the participant will be able to:
  • Explain the epidemiology surrounding an unintended pregnancy and the role of the NP in selecting effective preventive care
  • Compare and contrast the various LARC methods with regard to mechanisms of action, duration of therapy, adverse effects, and insertion techniques
  • Identify clinical considerations involved in selecting appropriate candidates for LARC
  • Examine best practices in effective contraceptive counseling strategies
